Developed to help electronics manufacturers detect product defects and production flaws, Environmental Stress Screening (ESS) forces infancy PC board and component failures that would otherwise occur after final assembly and product delivery. Performed as part of the manufacturing process or in new product qualification testing, ESS has the ultimate goal of improving profitability by eliminating defective products.

ESS consists of exposing a product to one or more stressful environments, such as temperature cycling or extreme temperatures, to expose defects that can’t be detected by visual inspection or electrical testing. Typically consisting of a test chamber, a controller, product fixturing, interconnect and wiring and a functional tester, ESS systems from Thermotron are turnkey systems specially designed to meet a wide range of ESS applications. Thermotron’s ESS Systems provide superior screening solutions by generating fast product temperature change rates with high velocity and uniform airflow. The chambers are capable of producing a temperature range from –73°C to +177°C. Available with vertical or horizontal airflow configurations, our ESS chambers can meet individual performance needs, product loading and throughout requirements. Because many ESS process involve power-up and testing of products while they are in the chamber, Thermotron’s ESS chambers are designed with a lockable enclosed cabinet behind the chamber workspace and allow for product interconnect to be routed through connectors or cable access ports in the rear wall.
