Universal Port Application Highlight - Remote Conditioner Module

Thermotron has successfully provided solutions involving Remote Conditioner Modules interfaced with SE chambers via the Universal Port.

One application involves the Aerospace industry. A multinational manufacturer of wheels, brakes, and braking systems for commercial aircraft is utilizing the remote conditioner concept to more efficiently and conveniently test the product while mounted to an aircraft wheel on a dynamometer. This new testing process will eliminate the logistical nightmare of sequentially bringing the brake assembly to -54°C, removing it from the chamber, fitting it to the aircraft wheel, craning it to the dynamometer, and stimulating the landing.

Customers value the fact that the Remote Conditioner can be removed from the Univeral Port, a plug put in its place, and the entire interior working volume is clear for testing large products.

Another application involves meeting the needs to test hall effect speed sensors for automotive powertrain control. The testing is carried out using a test bench capable of spinning up to 6,000 rpm. The large size of the test bench limits it from being placed in an upright environmental chamber. The customer built a clam shell over the top of the test bench and thermal cycles this space using the Remote Conditioner Module hooked up to an SE-600-6-6 chamber via interface through the Univeral Port.

This application involves temperature testing sensors with the potential of being exposed to transmission fluid. For this purpose, the chamber has been designed with a minimal spark interior. By simply removing the Remote Conditioner Module from the side of the chamber and fitting the Univeral Port with a plug, the sparking danger from the remote conditioning blower is removed from the workspace. As an added benefit, the critical workspace dimensions required to accommodate the size of the product under test remain intact and are not reduced by having a blower permanently mounted inside the SE chamber.

Remote Conditioner Module Features and Benefits:

  • Useful approach for testing awkwardly large or hard to reach products and products more easily tested in-place.
  • Flexible test solution allows the chamber to be used for standalone thermal cycling or humidity testing when Remote Conditioner Module is not in use, increasing asset utilization and lab productivity.
  • When the Remote Conditioner Module is removed and a Universal Port plug is put in its place, this frees up all of the internal workspace for testing.
  • Removing the blower from the chamber also reduces the heat load and increases performance.
  • Provides closed-loop control for testing in a remote enclosure.
  • Insulated ducts reduce heat loss and improve test performance and accuracy.
  • Temporary test structures can be built quickly and inexpensively.
  • Casters with leveling legs provide easy roll-up interface and height adjustment.
  • Temperature can be controlled at the end of the supply duct, at the return duct, or on the product under test.
